By Sonja: A Hidden Gem on Pasong Tamo

Had a catch up brunch with my good friend JJ Cocjin and we checked out By Sonja which is located in the compound where Better Dog used to be. I have always loved Sonja's Cupcakes, from the time they opened in Serendra almost 20 years ago so I was so happy to check out her latest venture.

The great thing about By Sonja is that aside from the usual cupcakes — which I forgot to take photos of — they have savory items on the menu. Apparently they specialize in galettes.

We tried both the ham (Complete) and the salmon (this has a much longer name, which I forget). Both were excellent. They have perfected the crepe! This is also evidently an organic free range egg and that in itself is something to appreciate!

We also tried the sweet crepes—of course I went for chocolate—and it was good as well.

But don't leave without trying Sonja's desserts. To my mind she is still one of the best pastry chefs in the country.

Pure indulgence!

I was so happy to see that Sonja herself was in the shop, personally attending to the kitchen, just as hardworking and hands on as she was when she opened the iconic Cupcakes by Sonja almost 20 years ago!! I remember her shop was one of my first articles for my column Menu in Sunday Inquirer Magazine.

Note though that the place has limited seating and limited parking. But your mouth will tell you, Sonja's creations are worth the wait!
